KMRC Round 1 and the start of the summer
Posted by Gareth Devey , 16 April 2009 - 07:05 AM
Well for the first round of the summer series i had decided to have a go at the 1/8th rally x (buggy) class. My buggy as most of you know sits in the shed in between the shows.
So i decided to take the leap and give it a go it couldnt be that bad (could it) lol.
The buggy was prepared ready for the first round and had its Picco P3 powerplant in place.
Round 1
Well the track was still damp from the rain we had the night before so i decided to go with the anglespikes for the first heat.
I started out quite agressively and quickly discovered that aggressive just doesnt work with buggys at all so i needed to alter my driving style to be a little more progressive and not as hard. The engine was running sweet and i felt like i could push a little harder and push i did. Having watched the top drivers on the quads my challange to myself was to follow their line and try to jump the first 2 then the tabletop landing on the downslope of the 2nd set of quads to allow you to pop off the 3rd nicely and into the long straight. The first attempt was a complete failure as i was way to close to the inside edge of the jumps and popped off the track into the grass rather than in a straight line not a great start but i was confident if i found the right line out of the final corner i could nail it. Next time round i was all ready to try again i went a little wider this time into the final corner and decided well this is my best chance as i was almost central in the jump so i went for it. Popped the first Double cleanly then the Table but had i gassed it enough to make the landing ok. YES was the answer i landed almost in perfect position and popped the last jump allowing me to make time up and down the straight. I Had completed the challange i had set myself and was very prepared for a Fantastic day.
Round 2
I chose angles again the track was dryer now but still not bone dry.
Not a great heat this one. was trying to push but had too much grip on the angles then had a radio failure so that was me out.
Round 3
Changed to crime fighters as it was drier
Went out and gave it as hard as i could push but i was probably trying too hard to improve and also had engine problems that slowed me toward the end of the run only managed a 4 lapper witch saw me start well down in the B final.
B Final
went out to just relax and get as high up as i could would have liked the bump up bit if it wasnt possible i would live with it. I Started well and was progressing thru the pack got up to about 4th when the car cut out and had to be recovered to the pits on recovery we found that the engine had loosened itself and lost a bolt out of the mount i ran back to the pits desperate to get out and try to recover we got a screw in there and tightened down and restarted about 8 mins in it was going well again but i had left myself way too much to do i settled into a rytham and was going quite well made 3 positions after 2 dropped out and actually overtook one on the track so at least i didnt finish dead last.
Conclusions
I enjoyed it with the buggy and will be carrying on in the summer series with the buggy. My usually great preperation let me down this time and silly things like the lipo dumping and screws comming lose let me down but hey there is always next time and i assure you THERE WILL BE A NEXT TIME !!!!!!!!!

Winter Series and hopes for 2009
Posted by Gareth Devey , 08 April 2009 - 06:16 PM
Well Its been a while since i last updated my blog and so much has happened but i wont bore you with the problems in my life i will get straight into the important buisiness RACING.
After what can only be described as a torrid summer i was about ready to hang up my transmitter and take a break away from the racing for the winter. Following my work problems i was pursuaded (by my wife no less) to join up with the boys for the second round of the winter series. The XT8 was in good shape following a rebuild so i thought hell why not.
Well from there i dont know what happened to me or where it came from but my god it did my driving was no where near as erratic as i had been thru the summer and with the ninja running so well in the awful conditions i managed to rack up enough points to go into the final round in 2nd place in the Team DB SS and 4th place overall at KMRC.
The last round had to be recheduled following poor weather conditions but the folowing weekend it was back on and we were ready to settle the finals on the track.
The heats went well enough and i was in to start the final in front of my opponent in the overall table BUT kieron who was in 3rd in the SS table had driven an awsome set of heats and taken Pole for the final. It was all down to me needing to finish no less than 3 places behind him to retain my 3rd place overall and The 2nd place in the SS.
We lined up on the grid following the formation lap when DISASTER !! on the warmup i had lost my battery box lid and my Lipo was hanging out. I couldnt start the race with the car in that condition so i ran off the rostrum as the race started and stright to the pits area to grab anything i could use to secure it so i could get out. At this point i was in jepordy of blowing all the hard work and losing my 2nd place in the SS and also my 3rd overall i was gutted as i ran back to the track with my gaffer tape in hand. I mummified the battery and wedged it so tightly in the box that it couldnt move the car restarted i got out on the track 5 mins in to the final and a LONG way behind. I started to bang in some quick laps and with the conditions drivers were having problem after problem could i possibly still nick it (i doubted it) the race panned out and at the finish i was still the last of the runners BUT crucially the car that was challanging me for 3rd in the KMRC table had dropped out so i knew i had the 3rd place and that made me happy as after the summer i had to get 3rd overall i was as happy as i could possibly be after a terrible day.
Kieron had pipped me to 2nd in the team DB champs after an awsome drive to win the final round and beat me by one point into 2nd.
All in all it was a great winter series and i actually enjoyed my racing again was fantastic to actually do well and prove to myself above all the others that i can do it and compete and i wasnt there to make up numbers.
Now to the Summer 2009
Well i have decided to stick with the XT8 and also the ninja but following a play day with the buggy i have decided to give the buggy a try in round 1 of the summer series with a plan that if it goes well i will do both thru the season but use the truggy to concentrate on the SRS that i have decided to give a go this year.
Will keep you all informed as to how i get on

Novarossi Raceway Report 26.10.2008 (Final Round)
Posted by Gareth Devey , 27 October 2008 - 06:59 AM
Well all of the preperation it came down to this.
The BIG one i knew i was safe in 5th Place but wanted to do my best to try and go out with a bang and set myself up for attempting the buggy in the winter series.
Sadly the rain was falling as i woke up and not having alot of sleep the night before it wasnt looking good im not keen on astro in the dry but in the wet tbh i hate it.
All the power of the ninja and no where to put it could well have been another title for this topic lol it was going to be one of those days but at least i could take the time and setup my shiny new M11.
Round 1
Despite setting it up on the table earlier in the week the end points were just not right and i had zero steering however i persevered and just wanted to get a few laps in to see how it felt the car itself felt ok i could turn in quite well but on the tighter corners the endpoints just were not right and more often than not i was running wide and losing alot of speed.
at the end of the heat i pulled in and switched off the transmitter and made my way back to the pits.
I proceeded to turn it on in the warmth of our indoor pit area and nothing not a bean oh no i was thinking reciever and that was brand new with no spares but then i noticed the light on the LRP regulator not lighting up i pulled it all apart and discovered to my horror about 3mm of water running around the radio box and the lipo was soaked i had my spare lipo in the box so hooked that up and found out it was the lipo at fault and not the reciever or the regulator.
Round 2
With my electrics now wrapped up in rubber (thanks andy) i was ready to try and get some better laps in with the EPA set better on my xray i was quite happy with the way it drove but the track conditions now were very slippery and there was no way to get the power down without losing it. Only upside of this whole round was the fact that i for the first time ever jumped and cleared the crossover and landed perfecty.
Round 3
Do Or Die time if i was to do anything today i had to pull something out of my backside but the conditions were against me i just couldnt push as i felt i wanted to and in trying to hard to get the power down it was so slippery i ended up on my roof more times than i was on my wheels, it just wasnt ment to be !
Final
To achive anything in the conditions i was going to need a miricle and that is nearly what i got into the first corner as a big comming together took out Nigel and Tom for just long enough to get way but then disaster i lost all power to the ninja and it was bogging down something chronic finally it cut and was recovered by my pitman (thanks kieron) but didnt look good as it just wouldnt clear no matter how hard sean tried to get it to. Less than a minute into the final and i thought it was all over for me i walked off the rostrum a cast face.
I decided to try and fiddle with the ninja to get it running again and after several minutes and tons of adjustments she barked back into life. with 5 mins left i had it all to do just not to finish last but with some good laps i managed to just about scrape above last place and gain a vital extra point.
Summery
Well to be honest i have come to the conclusion that i am a better driver on dirt than the astro surface from being in touch with nigel all day at the novarossi GP and our avarage times being very close all day i couldnt touch him on the astro and was well beaten by the end of the day.
5TH in the DB ss wasnt the result i had hoped for but a season of problems and non attendance at certain rounds did not help me
what i am more pleased about is the 8th overall at the NR series i set a goal of top 10 in the series and have made it (just)
Still there is always the winter series and KMRC who knows what could happen.

A New Arrival
Posted by Gareth Devey , 24 October 2008 - 09:29 AM
Well as most of you know i have been looking for a new transmitter for a while now i love the helios but have now had it for 12 months and just fancied a change.
Having had a 3pk before i didnt really want another one as the menus are a bit complicated and the functionallity are not as good as some
The 4PK was an option but cost was astronomical + futuba still seem to have problems with there recievers so i wasnt gonna risk that.
Finally after some soal searching i found myself looking at a Sanwa M11 again cost was an issue as new ones are hard to come by and the price is even higher so i was put off and almost settling on keeping the helios.
Well by chance i was browsing racechat and seen a M11 for sale £160 including 3 recievers and sanwa DSSS 2.4 included that to me was an awsome price cheapest i seen by far and including all the recievers i will need for the future well i couldnt resist any longer the urge took me and i had to get it unfortunatly for me this ment waiting till payday, the seller didnt mind waiting so i said the money would be his at the end of the month, he was happy and so was i, I decided to put the helios on ebay straight away as i knew it would sell quickly i set the reserve of £140 and a buy it now of £170 with £10 postage.
BANG within minutes it was sold i had to admit i was shocked and now slightly worried that i was due to race on sunday and currently without any transmitter (Gutted).
I emailed the seller of the M11 to find out his location and he was in ireland we agreed that he could send it special delivery so i got it yesterday. this was fantastic news and WHAT A GUY.
So i paid him and he sent it out to me, It arrived at about 11am yesterday and i hurridly unpacked it to see my latest addition.
First Thoughts BLIMY this is huge the screen sits on top and is the whole length of the transmitter the grip area is comfortable as it is rubber padded all of the buttons for trim and activating functions are within reach when in the driving position this was my biggest complaint with the helios as starting the countdown timer at race start was a mare.
it tooke me about an hour to figure out the binding process as this is completely different from spektrum with the sanwa system you have to bind the transmitter to the reciever then set the failsafe in a different mannor.
The settings on this thing are awsome it has all the usual + some really good innovations like the timer down alarm. Not only does it beep when it reaches 1.00 remaining but the handgrip itself vibrates this is an awsome function as when racing nitro its almost impossible to hear beeping so this will help with planning my pitstops as i have missed my pitmans call more than once.
all in all i am very pleased with it so far it is all set up and ready to go on the xt8 and will be up and running on the XB8 as soon as i pick my lipo up.

Damn spiders Everywhere far to many web problems
Posted by Gareth Devey , 16 October 2008 - 03:00 AM
Well blog 2 for me and not an RC related one.
Following the intergration of the blog program to the board this raised a number of problems with the look of the board and alot of work was needed to get it back up and looking neat and tidy.
replacing the missing buttons in the blogs control panel was my first order of the day some of the macros were easy to do locating the missing buttons i just replaced the missing code with the new code to add the button however not all the buttons were this easy as not all were shown on the skin control panel some were just written in the code as HTML wording now this to me is a whole new ballgame. as some of you may or may not know my web skills are entirely self taught since i took over the handling of the board from andy (who did a great job setting it up) i have been gradually adding to my skillset by reading webdesign forums and learning from a full time web designer anything that the forums could not answer however writing my own full HTML code is something i have never done and this was going to be a challange to say the least.
During my work day yesterday i started the conversion and adding the missing buttons one by one then half way thru WHAM the board skin goes dolally and failsafes back to its origonal skin to keep the board online albeit in a very plain and bland one now faltfinding wa sinvolved as well as code writing i was begginning to think that maybe this was beyond me to say that this caused me some frustration was untrue i would say it plain stressed me out as i didnt want to be the one accused of killing the board. 2 hours later (and about 4 pages of HTML) i found the problem a simple spelling mistake was all that caused the board skin to crash i corrected it and then danced around my office as the old skin reappeared.
now back to the buttons a suggestion had been made on one of the many forums i use that there may be an easyer way to do this using the origonal bland skin and simply copying the code replacing the file name of the old skin with that of the new one (a much easyer way of doing it) and saving myself several hours and more hair loss
so after a few hours and some adjustments its done !!!!
add a new section on the forum with an RSS input was not so easy but also done
all in all a very productive few days and now the Blog function is ready for its members blogs

First Blog Post Thoughts on the summer season and looking ahead.
Posted by Gareth Devey , 15 October 2008 - 02:19 PM
Well here it is my first of what i hope will be many blog posts over the next few months.
The last few days i have been rebuilding my buggy and was planning to put my old ninja engine in it.
But following a closer inspection it is not going to be possible as when i opened her up to seal backplate i discovered several chunks of my piston skirt floating around.
no idea how this happened but obviously it is game over on that front and back to the picco P3 Basic for the winter season.
so a full rebuild complete and looking gleeming new once again i am quite looking forward to the winter series ahead the challange of driving the XB8 under race conditions. If i like it enough i feel in the new year i will invest in an 808 and another Ninja JX engine to power me thru the summer series in rally X.
Well as i right this the summer series is nearing its conclusion one week away we will have our first Team Db SS champion, For me its been a long season full of highs and lows o have to admit that before the GP i was about ready to throw the towel in and go back to bashing just for the fun of it.
But the saturday at the GP gave me a much needed confidence boost i was quick in the 2 heats that were in good conditions and no problems but my own agression in the final heat when the wind picked up and my jumping skyward on the larger jumps cost me my 7 lapper that would have bumped me up the table further.
But what the whole did is give me a feel of what i can achieve if i take it a little more seriously and come back for 2009 better than ever and more determined to do well.
well thats it for my first blog post im hoping that a few more of our members and a couple of special guests will chime in and make this feature worth the time i have put into it.
See you all on the track
Gareth
